Behaviour Support Plan in NDIS

A person living with a disability may have multiple and complex needs depending on the diagnosis.  There may be behavioural changes caused by different reasons like brain injury due to accident, diseases like stroke, conditions such as autism and conduct disorders such as Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. These reasons not only cause distress to the person living with a disability but also hurt the family and the carers.

If you are managing an NDIS participant as a family member or as a carer and your loved one is showing complex behaviour, you may need a Behaviour Support Plan (BSP). This plan is usually devised in consultation with the family, carers and other support people involved in managing the participant. The main objective of this plan is to help better manage the concerning behaviour. This will help to improve the quality of life of the participants.

Devising an NDIS Behaviour Support Plan

The primary objective of BSP is to protect the participants and others around them from any potential harm and help them to improve their quality of life. The NDIS Commission Support Team is responsible for providing clinical guidance to the NDIS participants. The commission usually does not recommend using restrictive practices like physical, mechanical or medical constraints. These restrictions should be avoided until deemed necessary.

Trusted Support Coordination

Behaviour Support Plan can only be managed and developed by the qualified Health Care Practitioners recommended as suitable for the task by NDIS. This healthcare practitioner will be responsible for laying out essential functional behaviour assessments and devising a plan suitable to the individual needs and requirements of the participant involved. Behaviour Support Practitioners are generally engaged by your NDIS providers offering psychosocial recovery and trusted support coordination. Behaviour support practitioners usually take one month to devise an interim plan and up to six months for a comprehensive plan. These support practitioners are fully trained and devise strategies based on evidence and individual needs. These strategies should be proactive in approach so that it may address a participant’s needs and the functions of their behaviour.

Components of an Effective Behaviour Support Plan

While developing a Functional Behaviour Assessment, an NDIS support practitioner usually consults with participants and their loved ones. Previous behavioural support assessments and strategies to manage difficult behaviour should also be considered while working on the new behaviour support plan. Strategies that must be adopted may include:

  • Suggesting changes in the physical environment.
  • Abstaining from the factors that trigger complex behavioural issues.
  • Give them more opportunities for choice and access to an increased variety of activities.
  • Teaching the right skills and behaviour, including suitable communication strategies and guidelines.
